Hilton Head Island shares some of the most beautiful and unique landscape of any destination in the world.  The island is rich in history and  diversity.   The island is part of an area of South Carolina commonly referred to as the low country.  Thousands of years ago, native Americans found the region a haven for food and shelter.  In the early 1520s, the Spanish were the first Europeans to discover Hilton Head.  In 1663, Captain William Hilton landed and eventually his name was given to the island.  The island  was captured by Union forces in 1861 during the Battle of  Port Royal Sound.  In the 1950s, Charles Fraser sculptured out of the forests a natural community he called Sea Pines Plantation.

One of my favorite things to do on the Island is to take in a Shannon Tanner concert at Sheltor Cove, Shannon has been playing for years and at this point many of the kids he entertained are now adults, they still seem to enjoy the show as much as when the were kids. I love watching the kids from 3 to 90 singing, laughing, and just enjoining a wonderful time together in the small marina front venue.   I think bringing family and friends closer together  is one of the true treasures of Hilton Head Island.  As a kid I vacationed on Hilton Head every summer with my family.  I enjoyed playing golf, combing the beach for shells, watching dolphins, eating seafood, and visiting all the local tourist stops.   Years latter my  wife and I vacationed in Hilton Head on anniversaries and summer vacation and then later with our son and his grand parents.  We often talked about buying our own home on Hilton head and years latter we finally made the purchase.  There is something special about Hilton Head, not just the water, beaches, golf, tennis, biking and the like but, Hilton Head brings people together and for maybe just a week or two a year they forget troubles and tribulations and all seems right in their worlds.  - Hilton Head City Guide Reader

Verizon announced last year that it would not extend its title sponsorship with Hilton Head Island's annual PGA Tour event beyond the 2010 tournament, to be played April 15-18 at Harbour Town Golf Links. The tournament has an $84 million impact on the state's economy, according to a 2006 study by Clemson University, and contributed $1.2 million to charity last year. Since 1987, it has contributed almost $20 million to charities in South Carolina and Georgia.

Hilton Head Island real estate sales rose significantly in the Hilton Head Island area, which includes seven counties, from only 83 in January 2009 to 169 sales in January 2010.
